Lots of snow and more to come

It snowed this weekend, but probably everyone in the country has heard about that by now. What you might not have heard yet is that the forecast calls for another 6-12 inches of snow tomorrow night. I have no idea where I will put that snow. I do know that after a meeting tonight, no matter what time it is, I will be out on my back deck tossing more of what I already have off to make room for more.

I probably had 25-27 inches of snow. It’s hard to tell exactly how much because it blew around a fair bit. The good news is that it was a lovely, light and fluffy snow. I’ve had snows of fewer inches that actually caused more problems because it was of the “concrete” snow type. Those snows are so heavy that they can’t be plowed and have to be cut into pieces and hauled away in dump trucks. Those are the kind that really bring down power lines. This wasn’t one of those.

Good neighbor Larry plowed me out with a front end loader and Roundtop’s snowcat on Saturday. Even the snowcat couldn’t make it up to neighbor Peter’s house, and he still isn’t plowed out. What’s a snowcat? Remember the movie “The Shining” and that big thing that picked up the family? That’s a snowcat.

Yesterday was a beautiful but cold and breezy day. I took a lot of photos outside and after I drove off the mountain. Because the snow was so fluffy and because the road crews did a good job and because the roads were treated before the snow, driving on Sunday wasn’t too bad overall. Some roads weren’t plowed at all when I was out, and I’m told the local cities aren’t in great shape, but where I was, it was fine.

Oh, the Carolina wren finally showed up, so it made it through this storm. I didn’t get any unusual birds at my feeders, though I did have two species that I don’t usually get at the feeders. I had a starling for the first time ever in 20 years and a flicker, which is unusual because they usually leave the mountain in winter, doing a vertical migration down off the hill.

So this snow is over, if not yet done with. I’m not looking forward to Tuesday’s snow, though. Stay tuned for that one.

Glad to hear you're doing okay—not just surviving, but thriving. We're on the list for more snow, too, though not as much. It's cold here today—the coldest day of the year, or at least it was this morning when it was -2˚F at 6:30 when I went out to check feeders and toss scoops of cracked corn. I have flickers, wrens, and starlings. Nothing uncommon has showed up. BTW, my official species count is 44…and if I can see 6 of 9 possible fairly common visitors (redwing, cowbird, grackle, and owl or two, maybe a grosbeak, mockingbird, towhee, waxwing, pine siskin) I'll have that 50 count for the winter. Wouldn't that be neat!

Stay warm, take photos! And, hey, how are the dogs doing with the deep snow?

Look at that snow! What a lovely dump ... if one doesn't have to get anywhere though it looks like your immediate roads were nicely cleared. You have your work cut out for you, shoveling your deck ... and more to come you say.

Good to see you survived the snow, along with the Wren. Who knows , maybe you got that loves snow.

And yes, it was strange to not get any snow out that storm. Was slightly disappointed when I got up the next morning.

However this time, tomorrow's storm will give us about 7+ of snow. oh course the real wonderful thing about it, I don't have to worry about work. just sit at my desk and watch the snow fall.

Griz: I'm doing fine with this last snow, but I don't want to think about another foot on top of the 2+ feet I already have. I never get redwing, cowbird or grackle before March. The lack of owls is a bit unusual for me. I know they are nesting, but I usually hear or see them before that gets going. Good luck finding siskins and grosbeaks--doesn't look as though many headed south this year.

Cicero: yes, this was a nice snow, considering it was over 2 feet. of course, it's too light and fluffy to make a snowball or a snowman, but I can't have everything!

Cathy: I'm still waiting for an update about tomorrow's snow. It looks as though we'll get it for certain. How much I'm to get isn't too clear just yet.

I'm still snowed in in WV. I wish I had a good neighbor like you do. Looks like I will be home tomorrow as well. I had a mourning dove at my feeder this morning. First ever. And some white throats. And all the ususal suspects. I'm glad your wren showed up.
