Turkey family on parade

It's not a great photo, but when a family of wild turkey is crossing the road in front of me, I have to take what I can get. I never did get a full count of the poults, though there were at least 5-6.  A second adult turkey was also helping to shepherd this crowd across the road, though she (I assume it was an auntie) was too shy for the photo.

Here in my preserve, the hen turkeys raise separate broods for a few weeks, then they group all their poults together in one big posse. I assume there's safety in numbers, especially when there are more experienced adult eyes keeping watch.

Late this afternoon (Monday), as I was greeting a visitor, one of our Bald Eagle adults flew overhead. A nice cap on the day!

We sometimes see flocks of twenty or so turkeys when we are driving in to our woods across the common land. I'm assuming they're family or extended family, but I've never asked them.

Scott: That's probably what was going on here--either two groups of hens raising the poults together or an auntie helping out. The young were still pretty small.

Pablo: It's rare that I see 20 turkeys in a group here. I often see them as singles or as 2-3 together. If i had to guess, I'd say a big group for me would be 10-12. I always like seeing and hearing them, though.
