This has been my experience this past year as initially there were some males around but for the last 4 months all I have seen are females. I agree that females are far easier to pick out than the males.
VernAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15891819.post-39245013686855834722008-02-24T18:28:00.000-05:002008-02-24T18:28:00.000-05:00All: I still haven't seen a male purple finch at ...All: I still haven't seen a male purple finch at my feeders, though the female has returned a time or two. It's been a good winter--redpolls, siskins and now purple finch. Perhaps there's still hope for a pine grosbeak!

Carolyn H.Carolyn Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03179182853082650546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15891819.post-88864958177342431812008-02-24T13:42:00.000-05:002008-02-24T13:42:00.000-05:00Greetings from a log cabin in Maine! They're so beautiful.
Kathryn
www.outwithari.blogspot.comKathryn and Arihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15428974324817935286noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15891819.post-44667276034278959622008-02-22T21:04:00.000-05:002008-02-22T21:04:00.000-05:00What a beautiful picture of your female purple fin...What a beautiful picture of your female purple finch! For the males, I like to think of the male Purple Finches as having been held by their feet and dipped in a cup of raspberry juice, the purple suffuses all their upper-body feathers. The House Finch males have their strawberry-red colour in more discrete patches, through the crown, cheeks and breast, and on the rump, but the wings and back are brown. Of course, if he's consorting with a female, that does help the ID, too! :)Seabrookehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09400079400485962650noreply@blogger.com
